How It Works

What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height. It is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9 or 4:3. Different aspect ratios suit different purposes — from square social media posts (1:1) to widescreen video (16:9) and ultrawide cinema (21:9).

Common Aspect Ratios
  • 1:1 — Square. Used for social media profile pictures, Instagram posts, and album art.
  • 5:4 — Slightly wider than square. Common in 8×10 prints and medium format photography.
  • 4:3 — Classic TV and monitor ratio. Standard for Micro Four Thirds cameras and many smartphones.
  • 3:2 — Standard 35mm film and most DSLR/mirrorless cameras. Also 6×4 prints.
  • 16:9 — Widescreen HD video. Standard for YouTube, TV, and monitors.
  • 21:9 — Ultrawide cinema format. Used in movies and ultrawide monitors.
  • 9:16 — Vertical video. Used for stories, reels, and TikTok.
  • 2:3 — Portrait orientation of 3:2. Common for portrait prints and phone wallpapers.
Crop Anchor

The crop anchor determines which part of the image is kept when cropping. Center keeps the middle of the image, while other positions (top-left, bottom-right, etc.) align the crop region to that corner or edge. This lets you control whether important subjects near the edges are preserved.

How the Crop Works

The tool calculates the largest possible rectangle at the chosen aspect ratio that fits within your image. It then positions that rectangle according to the selected anchor point and shows you the cropped result with exact pixel dimensions.
